Percale vs. Sateen
In the heat of summer months, high quality Egyptian cotton bedding is our top pick for sleeping cool. When it comes to cotton sheets, there are two kinds of weaves that are most common: Percale and Sateen. While both fabrics are derived from the same material, the look, feel and performance of each varies.
A Percale is woven with a “one over, one under” weave that provides a crisp, cool feel with a matte finish. Sateen in contrast, is characterized by its “one yarn under and three (or more) yarns over” weave that create a silky, smooth appearance. Sateen’s weaving pattern makes it drape heavier on the body than percale. While both cotton-based fabrics are ideal warm-weather fabrics for bedding, think of light and breathable percale as your go-to fabric during summer months and opt for sateen during transitional seasons like spring and fall.
